Friends of the Carpenter's Boatshop

This is a tribe for the many friends of the Carpenter's Boatshop in Pemaquid, ME. I hope it also serves as a meeting ground for former apprentices.

ABOUT THE CARPENTER'S BOATSHOP

Begun in 1979, The Carpenter's Boatshop is an apprenticeship program of people of all ages in transition. Whether they are between college and life careers, jobs and new directions, or simply transitioning into retirement, the Boatshop provides a "safe harbor" before setting sail on a new course of life.

While apprentices are considering goals and positions, they live in a community of fifteen people who learn boatbuilding, carpentry, sailing, seamanship, community service, and explore personal faith through reading, study, and discussion. Basic life skills are also practiced by apprentices, who share in gardening, caring for animals, cutting and splitting firewood, food preparation, and other household responsibilities.

There is no tuition for this one-year program (mid-September to mid-June), and expense are met through the building and selling of traditional wooden boats, such as dories, dinghies, skiff and sailboats. Contributions also sustain this community, and allow for larger purchases of tools and equipment.

Based on the sixth century Rule of St. Benedict, time is spent each day in the seven daily practices of work, study, prayer, recreation, service, hospitality and worship. Apprentices and instructors, who have themselves been apprentices, have found clarity for their lives as they share in this simple, ecumenical community.
